Morocco Maintains Summer Time as Europe Prepares for Daylight Saving Switch

The winter time change of 2024 is approaching, and this year again, Morocco is going it alone. While France and the rest of Europe will turn their clocks back an hour in the night of Saturday, October 26 to Sunday, October 27, the kingdom will maintain summer time (GMT+1).
This maintenance of summer time, introduced in 2018, had not been unanimous at the time. However, the decree provides for the possibility of a one-time time change by government decision, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. This year, the switch to winter time in Morocco should therefore take place around mid-February 2025.
For the French and Europeans, at 3 a.m. on October 27, it will be 2 a.m. One more hour of sleep to face the winter, a small consolation when the days get shorter.
This seasonal time change, introduced after the 1973 oil shock, was initially aimed at saving energy. Its effectiveness is now being questioned, but it remains in force and harmonized at the European level.
A simple way to remember the direction of the change: in octobER, we REcede. In the spring, around the month of APril, we ADvance.
The definitive abolition of the time change was considered by the European Commission in 2018, but the Covid-19 crisis has postponed this project. Associations, such as the Association citoyenne heure équitable et durable (Ached), are campaigning for its abolition.
