Morocco LNG: Strategic Gas Pipeline Project Delayed

The project aimed to select the companies responsible for building a pipeline connecting the future Nador West Med gas terminal to the existing gas network, enabling LNG imported via Spanish terminals to be transported to two power plants. The route also included a strategic extension toward the industrial areas of Mohammedia and Kénitra. The ministry justified the postponement by citing the emergence of new parameters and assumptions related to the project, resulting in the immediate suspension of application submissions and the opening of bids received to date.

This infrastructure is part of the national strategy to replace natural gas with coal while accelerating the development of renewable energy, whose share is expected to reach 52 % of installed capacity by 2030. According to government projections, national natural gas demand is expected to grow massively, reaching 8 billion cubic meters in 2027, compared with approximately 1 billion cubic meters currently.
