Morocco Leads MENA Region in MIT’s Green Future Index, Ranks 26th Globally

In the ranking of the MIT Technology Review Insights 2021 Green Future Index, Morocco ranks 26th globally and first in the MENA region.
Through the Green Future Index, MIT Technology Review Insights ranks, based on their development and commitment, the 76 ambitious countries and territories to build a carbon-free future. This positioning examines to what extent economies, industries, agriculture and societies are determined to promote clean energy, through investment in renewable energy sources, innovation and green finance.
Thus, in its 2021 ranking, Morocco comes first in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region and 26th globally, followed by Israel, 38th globally. On the African continent, Morocco is in second place behind Kenya, which is 23rd globally.
In the field of green innovation, the kingdom comes in 5th place globally, just after Luxembourg. Regarding climate policy, it is in 27th position, 41st in terms of CO₂ and 47th in terms of energy transition. With this progress made by Morocco, the MIT Technology Review Insights indicated that the kingdom is truly committed to fighting climate change. Thus, Morocco has implemented several large-scale projects, including the Noor solar energy complex in Ouarzazate, to achieve its goal. The scientific journal also pointed out that with such improvements, the country will soon have a much better score.
It should be noted that for this year’s 2021 ranking, Iceland, Denmark, Norway, France and Ireland stand out in the top 5 of the most committed countries. The United States, for its part, occupies 40th place.
