Morocco Leads Maghreb in Children’s Rights, Ranks 54th Globally

Morocco stands out as the best performing country in the Maghreb in terms of children’s rights. This is revealed by the ranking of a foundation based in the Netherlands.
With a score of 0.776, Morocco ranks 54th out of 194 countries evaluated in the ranking of the KidsRights Foundation based in the Netherlands. It owes this position to the good results recorded in terms of children’s right to health. However, gaps remain in the area of the right to life. Progress is also needed in the areas of education and empowerment of children’s rights, where the kingdom ranks 67th and 76th respectively. According to this 2024 Children’s Rights Index, the kingdom outperforms Algeria (56th), Tunisia (59th), Libya (100th) and Mauritania (134th). Carried out in collaboration with the Erasmus University of Rotterdam and the International Institute of Social Studies, this ranking measures the countries’ compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
This year, the "KidsRights" foundation is warning about the global "polycrisis". It reveals a worsening of the global polycrisis and its impact on children’s rights. Last year, the foundation had already identified this polycrisis as a major factor affecting children’s rights globally. But the situation has further deteriorated, exacerbated by the persistent aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, which continues to affect the mental well-being of children and young people, as well as their educational prospects. "Given the exponential increase in the negative effects of the polycrisis on children, it is relevant to put in place a concrete recovery plan," said Marc Dullaert, founder and president of KidsRights. And he added: "I think the conclusions and figures from the KidsRights Index will help develop a solid recovery plan."
