Morocco Leads African COVID-19 Vaccination Efforts, Accounts for 94% of Continent’s Doses

In Africa, the country that has vaccinated its population the most is Morocco, with a national vaccination campaign launched in January 2021 and which aims to reach 80% of the population by June. While Morocco has already vaccinated more than 4 million people, some African countries are just starting the campaign, and others are not even considering it yet.
About 100 million people have already received a first injection in the world, with more or less significant inequalities depending on the countries. Morocco accounts for 94% of the vaccine doses administered in Africa, the result of a very good vaccination strategy put in place by the authorities, eager to return to normal life.
According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), while a person is vaccinated every second in rich countries, 76 countries in the world have not yet received a single dose. A situation that particularly affects African countries. Yet, as of March 13 at noon, the number of confirmed cases of infection with the new coronavirus in Africa had reached 4,015,057. As for the number of deaths related to the pandemic, it stood at 107,229 on the same date. There are also 3,599,219 recoveries.
Some African countries like Morocco have chosen to deal directly with pharmaceutical companies. In addition to these individual initiatives, the WHO has launched the Covax facility which will allow rich countries to provide free vaccines to developing countries. Some countries are already receiving these doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine. The goal is to be able to vaccinate around 600 million people.
For now, Morocco is leading the ranking and should be able to vaccinate its target population estimated at 25 million Moroccans by August. In addition to the 60 million doses ordered, the country should also receive its share of the Covax program. Behind Morocco are Rwanda, South Africa, the Seychelles, Algeria, Senegal, Zimbabwe, and Mauritius.
