Morocco Lawmakers Confront Alleged Extortion by Unauthorized Parking Attendants

The parliamentary group of the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) expresses its concern in the face of what it describes as "harassment" and "racketeering" of which motorists are victims by self-proclaimed car guards.

Ahmed Abbadi, PPS deputy, is the initiator. He has just submitted a written question to Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit in which he depicts a worrying situation where individuals in yellow vests, acting as car guards, reign supreme over various streets and boulevards of the kingdom, especially in summer.

According to the deputy, these guards demand and sometimes brutally the payment from citizens who park in public places. These spaces, normally managed by municipal councils, are taken over by these individuals who have no legal right to impose a financial compensation for their "service".

The deputy highlights the negative impact of this phenomenon, which is causing growing discontent among citizens due to mistreatment, extortion and sometimes even threats and insults. The official also raises the exploitation of people in precarious situations by some unscrupulous individuals, who encourage them to extort and threaten users of public places. The latter are prevented from parking their vehicles if they refuse to pay these illegal fees, set in a capricious and arbitrary manner.

The Interior Minister is asked to detail the measures adopted or to come to protect citizens from these illegal behaviors, likely to lead to dramatic accidents.
