Morocco’s Law Enforcement Tops Corruption Reports, Hotline Data Reveals

In Morocco, the corruption statistics obtained through the direct reporting hotline in 2020 indicate that law enforcement officers are the most corrupt. Since its launch on May 14, 2018 until the end of 2020, this line has recorded 15,743 calls.
In total, 46 auxiliary and law enforcement officers were caught in the act of bribery, according to the report of the public prosecutor’s office. Members of the Royal Gendarmerie, the National Security, the Civil Protection, the Water and Forests, and the Auxiliary Forces take second place. There are 32 cases of flagrant corruption. Local authority agents come next.
The value of the bribes ranges from 50 DH to 300,000 DH. The Marrakech-Safi region ranks first with 37 recorded cases. These corruption cases were tried at first instance (19 files) and on appeal (91 files). We note: acquittal for 12 cases, 3 cases closed, 14 pending trial and 7 under investigation.
What about the sentences handed down? There are 12 cases of suspended prison sentences, 79 judgments of imprisonment for a term of one to six months, 17 convictions for a term of 6 months to 1 year of imprisonment, and four convictions for 2 years or more of imprisonment.
