Morocco Launches WHO-Compliant National Death Registry System
Wednesday 3 July 2019, by
A joint circular was signed on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 by the Ministries of Health and the Interior. It deals with the establishment of a national system for registering causes of death, in line with international standards.
To comply with the standards recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the registration of causes of death. This is the objective of this established national system, which is part of the national priorities and international commitments of the Kingdom.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, this system makes it possible to "identify the main factors of the population’s mortality". An important approach, especially when we know that "knowledge of the causes of death is likely to improve evidence-based strategic planning, in order to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and improve the evaluation of health programs," adds the same source.
On another aspect, it is reported that the adoption of this system will also make it possible to produce indicators, to regularly assess the state of health of the population, in connection with the health targets provided for in the framework of the sustainable development goals.
Accordingly, the circular establishes a new Death Certificate, in line with the standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). This is now, insists the press release, the "official basic document to be considered by all public and private health facilities and the Municipal Health Offices".
