Morocco Launches Study to Modernize Airports Nationwide by 2045

Morocco plans to soon conduct a study on the development of its airports by 2045. An international call for tenders has recently been launched for this purpose.
This study is in line with the development of the National Airport Master Plan (SDAN), aimed at providing the kingdom with a clear vision for the development of its airport infrastructure, Challenge reports. In recent years, Morocco has liberalized the air transport sector, signing agreements with the European Union, the United States and several other countries.
This liberalization policy has made it possible to attract more tourists to the kingdom and to strengthen its international connectivity, as well as its position as a leading tourist destination. But this was without taking into account the Covid-19 health crisis, which has severely affected the sector, leading to the closure of airspaces, the cancellation of trips and, as a result, huge losses for airlines, airports and the various players in the air transport sector.
In this context of recovery, and more than ten years after the last SDAN study in 2013, Morocco wants to update the sector’s data and project itself into the future with precision. This justifies the launch of the study on the development of airports by 2045, which will take into account 20 airports and airfields in the kingdom. It will be carried out in five phases related in particular to the analysis and forecasting of air traffic, the planning of the development of each airport, the establishment of a work program, and the setting up of a monitoring committee for the implementation of the SDAN.
The study will be conducted using a methodology that will allow for an in-depth analysis of past traffic and consideration of future developments. Data on the current performance of air and road transport will be used for this purpose. The company that is selected will have a deadline of 420 days to carry out this study and submit its report.
