Morocco Launches Investigation into Anti-Lockdown Protests Amid COVID-19 Outbreak

Following violations of confinement in the cities of Tangier, Tetouan, Fez and Sale, the public prosecutor’s office has decided to open an investigation.
Dozens of people marched on the night of Saturday, March 21 to Sunday, March 22, in the streets of Tangier, Tetouan, Fez and Sale, in violation of the mandatory confinement decreed by the Ministry of the Interior to counter the progression of the COVID-19 epidemic.
Following these demonstrations that have aroused the indignation of Internet users, the public prosecutor’s office ordered the opening of an investigation. This means that all the people who participated in these marches will be brought to justice.
Two of them were even arrested and placed in custody, the Tangier public prosecutor’s office said. These two individuals will be questioned as part of this investigation. They will be prosecuted for non-compliance with the confinement order, insults and incitement to violence.
