Morocco Launches Free Sheep Tagging Program for Eid al-Adha Food Safety

The National Office of Food Safety (ONSSA) has started identifying sheep and goats intended to be sacrificed during Eid al-Adha.
The operation is designed to facilitate the traceability of the animals. In particular, the labeling guarantees the traceability of their origins in the event of a food scandal, indicates a press release from the office, specifying that it is carried out free of charge for all breeders in the country.
Concretely, ONSSA inserts a yellow ring in the animals’ ears, which lists a unique serial number as well as the mention "عيد الاضحى" (Eid Al Adha). Last year, the number of sheep and goats identified for Eid Al Adha reached 7.2 million, it is pointed out, adding that since January 2022, the veterinary services of ONSSA have registered more than 242,000 sheep and goat breeding and fattening units.
The Office also ensures the quality of the drinking water, animal feed, medicines used at the level of farms and fattening units as well as the circulation of poultry manure which is conditioned by obtaining a pass from the veterinary services of ONSSA in order to follow their traceability.
