Health Ministry Warns of Carbon Monoxide Risks During Eid Al-Adha Charcoal Use

The Ministry of Health urges Moroccans to be cautious and vigilant in the use of charcoal on the occasion of the rituals of the celebration of Eid al-Adha. This substance can, in some cases, cause carbon monoxide poisoning following its use.

The toxicity and danger of charcoal are not perceived by the naked senses, as it is colorless, odorless and tasteless, and does not cause any irritation in the throat or respiratory tract in case of inhalation. Also, the Health Department has given some advice from the Moroccan Anti-Poison and Pharmacovigilance Center, under its supervision, according to a statement from the ministry.

According to the text, this center prohibits the use of charcoal in enclosed spaces, where there is no good air circulation. It advises the use of charcoal in a brazier (Majmar), outside the concessions and in open spaces (balconies, roofs, in front of the house...). It is recommended to open the windows and doors to ensure good ventilation of the house, before lighting the charcoal and during cooking, and to take it out as soon as the preparation is finished.

In apartments and small houses that lack ventilation, the use of an electric grill is recommended as a replacement for the brazier, knowing that it must be taken out of the house when going to sleep.

In case of charcoal poisoning, you must call the toll-free number 0 801 000 180 of the Moroccan Anti-Poison and Pharmacovigilance Center, open 24/7, for a quick intervention or even a medical consultation, concludes the document.
