Morocco Launches Campaign to Combat Rising Scorpion and Snake Attacks as Summer Heat Intensifies

With the rise in temperatures, scorpion stings and snake bites are multiplying in certain regions of Morocco. To support the affected populations, the Red Crescent has launched an awareness campaign in the Rhamna region.

The summer season is back with its share of incidents related to scorpion stings and snake bites. The Moroccan Red Crescent, in partnership with the province of Rhamna, civil protection, the health delegation and the elected councils, has launched a public awareness campaign on the dangers of scorpion stings and envenomations (PES).

This campaign also aims to raise awareness about snake bites, with a focus on the need to provide appropriate care and first aid to victims, recalls Barlamane.

The Red Crescent volunteers are expected very soon in several rural communes under the same province, particularly those recording the highest number of scorpion and viper envenomation cases. In these localities, the volunteers will strengthen the local population’s awareness of the risks of stings and bites.

Pending the arrival of these volunteers, the Ministry of Health has invited the populations of rural and residential areas to clean up their places of residence. It has also asked the victims’ relatives to transfer them to the nearest emergency department as soon as possible. It has also prohibited the use of traditional methods, which often lead to serious complications.

For the record, more than 25,000 cases of scorpion stings and some 350 snake bites are recorded each year in Morocco.
