Morocco Launches Bid for Coastal Tsunami Warning System

To protect its coasts, which according to scientists, are not immune to a tsunami, Morocco has decided to equip itself with an alert system.
It is in this context that a call for tenders open to all consultants both in Morocco and internationally has been launched by the Directorate General of Meteorology. It concerns a study on the implementation of a tsunami warning system. The opening of the bids will take place on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, according to sources cited by Le360, the cost of this study will be around 1.5 million dirhams.
The successful bidder of this contract will have 14 months to carry out this study. It will be a question of establishing a comprehensive diagnosis of the situation in Morocco and the level of tsunami risk to which the country is exposed. It will also take into account current international practices to combat this type of phenomenon. The study will especially have to assess the relevance of setting up a tsunami warning system.
One thing is certain, Morocco is not immune to a tsunami. According to a study conducted by Spanish researchers on the Averroès marine fault, in the Alboran Sea, its geology has the capacity to generate a coastal tsunami and there is a strong chance that the neighboring coastal areas could be affected by the arrival of tsunami waves.
