Morocco Launches $250 Million Flood Recovery Program for Southeastern Region

King Mohammed VI has just ordered the launch of a rehabilitation program for the areas affected by floods in southeastern Morocco.
This program, with a provisional budget of around 2.5 billion dirhams, aims to support and accompany the reconstruction and rehabilitation of damaged buildings and homes, as well as the rehabilitation of road infrastructure, telecommunications, electricity and drinking water networks, and sewerage networks.
The government has mobilized "all the human and logistical means" to respond quickly and effectively to the needs of the affected population, and has involved the various ministerial departments concerned in order to ensure the proper implementation of this ambitious program, said a statement from the Head of Government.
The provinces concerned by this program are Errachidia, Midelt, Ouarzazate, Tinghir, Zagora, Figuig, Jerada, Taroudant, Tata, Tiznit, Guelmim and Assa Zag. Agricultural activities in the affected areas will also benefit from support, in particular through the repair of small and medium-sized hydraulic works and support for livestock farmers who have lost their herds due to the floods.
The torrential rains that hit the province of Tata caused major floods, resulting in considerable human and material losses. The provisional report drawn up by the local authorities indicates two deaths and 15 missing persons, including 14 passengers of a bus swept away by the waters of the Tata wadi.
