Morocco to Launch 5G Network Ahead of 2025 Africa Cup of Nations

Morocco is accelerating its digital transition. Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Minister Delegate to the Head of Government, in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, announced on Monday in Rabat the upcoming launch of 5G. This fifth-generation technology will be deployed in the Kingdom in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in 2025 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The Moroccan government aims for a 25% population coverage in 5G by 2026. This rate should reach 70% in 2030, the minister specified. The cities that will host the World Cup matches will benefit from full 5G coverage. Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni detailed this plan during an oral question session at the House of Representatives, in response to a question on digital services in mountain areas.
The deployment of 5G is accompanied by a vast fiber optic equipment program. 6,300 public administrations will be connected by 2026 and 5.6 million Moroccan households by 2030. It is a colossal project awaiting Morocco.
The development of digital services is at the heart of the national strategy for the development of the telecommunications sector, the minister stressed, recalling the efforts made by the various actors to strengthen the sector’s infrastructure. The executive supports telecom operators through investment agreements. In 2023, more than 8.4 billion dirhams have been invested to support national digital transformation projects.
