Morocco's Lake Tamda Drying Up, Threatening Tourism and Local Economy

The problem of the drying up of Lake Tamda in the province of Azilal is a concern for MP Saïd Atghlast, who has addressed a written question to the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, Social and Solidarity Economy on this subject.

Saïd Atghlast asked what measures the ministry plans to take to find a viable solution to the problem of the drying up of Lake Tamda, which plays an important role in the tourism development of the region. In addition to being the only recreational area for the local residents, the lake also attracts many visitors from neighboring regions during the summer, added the MP, stressing that this lake generates income and creates jobs for young people during the summer season.

It is therefore rightly that Lake Tamda has been integrated into the tourist map of the province, continued Atghlast, also indicating that this lake is the main source of irrigation for the region. The drying up of this lake is due to the successive years of drought that have hit Morocco and the increase in the number of wells drilled in the region, explained the MP, specifying that this situation risks leading to an ecological disaster and the death of aquatic species.

A network of 13 associations has mobilized to save this lake by supplying it with water from a well located in the Bahi douar, Atghlast also informed, adding that this initiative was carried out with the contribution of several communities from the High and Middle Atlas. However, it remains a temporary solution, pending the finding of a permanent solution to this problem.
