Morocco’s King Orders Restoration of Hundreds of Jewish Heritage Sites

A year after the normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel, King Mohammed VI has just ordered the renovation of hundreds of synagogues, cemeteries and Jewish heritage sites throughout the kingdom.
King Mohammed VI has recently launched an initiative to restore hundreds of historic Jewish sites in the kingdom, reports Israel Hayom. It is a question of renovating hundreds of synagogues, cemeteries and Jewish heritage sites in several cities of Morocco, including the Jewish cemetery of the city of Fez, which contains 13,000 tombs, it is specified. Another decision taken by the sovereign: to restore the original names of certain Jewish neighborhoods in the country. In Morocco, several Jewish museums have opened their doors. In parallel, other initiatives aimed at responding to the growing interest in the preservation of the Moroccan Jewish heritage have been taken.
Under the aegis of the United States, Morocco normalized its diplomatic relations with Israel on December 10, 2020 in exchange for the American recognition of the kingdom on the Sahara. Since then, the two parties have been working to strengthen their ties. The United States, Morocco and the Hebrew State intend to celebrate the 1st anniversary of the tripartite agreement signed in the presence of King Mohammed VI in Rabat during a high-level tripartite meeting scheduled for December 22, 2021.
