Morocco’s King Orders Pay Raise for Imams and Muezzins Over Next 4 Years

Imams in Morocco will see their allowance increase progressively over the next four years. King Mohammed VI gave the instruction, according to the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs.
Imams are not the only ones affected by this royal decision. Mohammed VI also ordered that the muezzins receive the same increase and according to the same terms, the ministry said in a statement.
Last year, the imams had organized several demonstrations and sit-ins, particularly in Rabat. The grievances were numerous, including "a decent life, the protection of the cultural heritage of the ’charter system’ without the intervention of associations, the granting of housing-jobs, the right to participate in public solidarity, compensation for job loss, compensation as a right to support their children, the right to religious and national holidays, the non-organization of interviews and exams for those with a certificate of testimony (certificate of qualification), registration in social security, as well as the reintegration of people dismissed by the ministry."
