Morocco’s King Orders Comprehensive Family Code Reform to Advance Women’s Rights

King Mohammed VI has made the promotion of women’s and family issues his priority. In this regard, he has addressed a letter to Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch regarding the revision of the Family Code.
"In parallel with the mission with which" King Mohammed VI "has entrusted the Head of Government, through this letter, the Sovereign has entrusted the steering of the preparation of this important reform, in a collective and collegial manner, to the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Council of the Judiciary and the Presidency of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, given the centrality of the legal and judicial dimensions of this issue," says a statement from the Royal Cabinet.
The Sovereign "has called on the aforementioned institutions to closely associate with this reform the other bodies directly concerned by this issue, foremost among them the Supreme Council of Ulema, the National Human Rights Council, the Government Authority in charge of Solidarity, Social Integration and the Family, while also opening up to civil society institutions and actors, researchers and specialists," the same source specifies.
He also asks them to "submit the proposed amendments that will emerge from these broad participatory consultations" to his appreciation "within a maximum period of six months and this, before the government drafts the bill on this subject and submits it to parliament for adoption".
