Morocco's Islamist PJD Party Faces Financial Crisis, Seeks Donations to Repay Government

To fill a debt of at least eight million dirhams, the Party of Justice and Development (PJD) has launched an appeal for donations. The survival of the Islamist party is at stake.

Under pressure from the authorities, the lamp party has launched an appeal for donations from its supporters in an attempt to replenish its coffers, which the electoral defeats since last year have largely contributed to emptying.

Eight million dirhams to be repaid to the Ministry of the Interior. This amount represents part of the subsidy received before the elections by the party, i.e. 80% of the total amount. The reason is that the party only won 13 seats in the elections, compared to 125 in 2016.

Since this debacle, the PJD has experienced defections, with former ministers, parliamentarians and presidents of local authorities proving to be the culprits. The latter would not have paid their contributions to the party after the return to the head of the political formation of Abdelilah Benkirane.

As a result, the PJD is going through a difficult financial period, as its budget has dropped from 30 to only 3 million dirhams, Benkirane revealed, specifying that his party would have to repay significant sums to the Ministry of the Interior, but that this would be done in several installments.
