Morocco’s Islamic Ministry Rejects Astronomical Predictions for Eid al-Fitr Date

Controversy over the end of Ramadan. The Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs wants to keep the monopoly of institutions that can give the date of Eid al fitr in Morocco.
In a statement, the ministry states that "only the effective observation of the lunar crescent prevails in the kingdom to announce the beginning of the month of Shawwal," specifying that "any anticipation, even if its content corresponds to the announcement, is considered false information."
The ministry is thus reacting to information announcing Eid Al Fitr for next Sunday on the basis of astronomical calculations, recalling that in Morocco, the observation of the lunar crescent determining the beginning of the month of Shawwal, will take place on Saturday, Ramadan 29, 1441 of the Hegira. An official statement will be released later to inform citizens of the results of this observation.
The ministry also calls on the media to wait for the official announcement before giving the information.
