Morocco Invests $6 Billion in Sahara Development Projects, Government Reports Progress

The development program for the southern provinces of the Kingdom is progressing well. In the assessment presented by the government, several projects are under construction, others will be launched in 2021.
Recently questioned by all the parliamentary groups on the development program for the southern provinces, the Head of Government, Saad-Eddine El Othmani, was optimistic about the progress of the implementation of the projects.
"Even if some projects have been impacted by the exceptional health situation experienced by our country, the work carried out is focused on catching up the delay they are experiencing, so that they are completed within the set deadlines," said the Head of Government before the deputies of the House of Representatives.
Furthermore, 336 projects have been launched for an amount of 46.8 billion dirhams, of which 179 are already in operation. 236 others requiring an envelope of 25 billion dirhams are awaiting launch.
It should be noted that several projects will be launched in 2021, as part of the faster realization of projects already underway. The Executive’s priority projects include the Dakhla Atlantique port, the desalination of seawater to irrigate 5,000 hectares and the launch of wind power stations. All these projects are part of the reduction of spatial disparities suffered by the southern regions, with allocations reserved for them until the end of 2023.
