Morocco Invests $1.8 Billion to Eliminate Casablanca Slums by 2030

18.6 billion dirhams. This is the budget allocated by the authorities of the Casablanca-Settat region to rehouse the inhabitants of the slums in affordable housing.

The rehousing of families living in slums as part of the Slum-Free Cities Program implemented in the prefectures of Casablanca and Mohammedia and the provinces of Nouaceur and Madiouna, should, according to an agreement signed between all stakeholders in this project, be financed by the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council to the tune of 500,000 dirhams, the Ministry of Economy and Finance to the tune of 375,340 dirhams, the Ministry of Territorial Development, Housing, Urban Planning and City Policy to the tune of 2.5 billion dirhams, the State Property Directorate to the tune of 700 million dirhams and the beneficiaries to the tune of 6.2 billion dirhams.

Some 62,000 families living in slums in the provinces and prefecture of Casablanca, Nouaceur, Mediouna and Mohammedia will be rehoused in social housing, according to the terms of the agreement, which also provides for the demolition of the slums in these provinces and prefectures. The rehousing process will start next September, local sources tell Hespress, specifying that the families living in the slums located in Sidi Moumen, particularly the one called "Kariane Rhamna", will be prioritized. The Casablanca-Settat authorities are working to definitively rid the economic capital of these slums before the 2030 World Cup.
