Morocco Invests $327 Million to Triple Tangier Airport Capacity for 2030 World Cup

The National Airports Office (ONDA) and the Ministries of the Interior, Habous and Islamic Affairs, Economy and Finance, Equipment and Water, and Transport and Logistics, are working on the Tanger Ibn Battouta airport extension project, in the perspective of the 2030 football World Cup that Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

Morocco is mobilizing more than 3.27 billion dirhams for the Tanger Ibn Battouta Airport extension project. Its objectives can be summarized in two points: to increase the airport’s capacity from 2 to 7 million passengers per year, taking into account the capacity of the existing terminal, in order to be able to accommodate the forecast number of passengers and movements, under the safety and security conditions provided for by the regulations in force, and to contribute to the tourism and economic development of the project’s area of influence.

This project is at the heart of a partnership agreement between the Ministries of the Interior, Habous and Islamic Affairs, Economy and Finance, Equipment and Water, and Transport and Logistics. Approved by an absolute majority during the March ordinary session of the Council, this agreement aims to define the terms of the partnership for the financing and realization of the extension of Tanger Ibn Batouta Airport, and the off-site airport works necessary for this extension. The National Airports Office (ONDA), the Wilaya of the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, the Regional Council, the Tanger Municipal Council, and the Loukkos Hydraulic Basin Agency, are also involved in the implementation of this project.

The extension of Tanger airport will be carried out on an area of about 199 hectares. The work includes the construction of a new passenger terminal with an area of 55,000 square meters, a new modern control tower, and the development of a new road leading to the airport. It is also planned to create a vehicle parking lot with a capacity of 1,400 spaces, as well as an aircraft parking lot, to widen and build a 6-kilometer fence.
