Morocco has officially launched preliminary studies to determine the technical specifications and financing model for a highway project connecting Marrakech to Fez via Beni Mellal and Khenifra.
The cost of this infrastructure is currently estimated at around 28 billion dirhams. According to information provided by Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, in a written response to a parliamentary question, this project represents a key infrastructure development for the country. "This project, stretching over a length of approximately 420 kilometers, is one of the structuring projects for the national territory," stated Nizar Baraka. He added that it "will connect major economic hubs such as Marrakech-Beni Mellal and Fez-Meknes, passing through other towns (Kalaa des Sraghna, Khenifra, Mrirt, Azrou)."
The planned highway aims to achieve several goals. According to the details provided, its implementation is intended to reduce congestion on National Road No. 8. It is also expected to contribute to improving road safety for users. Furthermore, the project is presented as a tool to reduce regional disparities and stimulate economic activity in the regions it will cross.
The necessity of this project was highlighted by Member of Parliament (MP) Mohamed Baddou, a member of the National Rally of Independents (RNI). In his question to the minister, he described this highway link as a "vital project" to facilitate travel between the kingdom’s different cities. The parliamentarian also stressed the importance of securing its financing and completion before the 2030 World Cup deadline.
