Morocco Invests 18 Billion Dirhams Annually in Road Safety and Infrastructure Projects

The Ministry of Equipment and Water invests nearly 18 billion dirhams each year to implement road projects, said Nizar Baraka on Wednesday, during a conference in Rabat.
In his speech at the opening of the national conference organized by the ministry, in partnership with the Permanent Moroccan Association of Road Congresses (AMPCR), on the theme "Exploitation and Road Safety in Mountain Areas", Baraka indicated that his department regularly deploys specialized teams to reopen roads in mountainous areas in winter due to snowfall, and in desert areas in summer due to the encroachment of sand dunes on the roads.
The national strategy for road safety 2017-2026 adopted by Morocco, pays particular attention to the securing of road infrastructure, said Mohamed Abdeljalil, the Minister of Transport and Logistics, however deploring the increase in road accidents caused by two and three-wheelers. The road space is a "shared space that must guarantee the right to travel safely for all categories of road users, which can be achieved through a secured road infrastructure," he specified.
To strengthen road safety, urgent actions must be taken, including the training of human resources, the adoption of a specific system for rating and classifying the road network according to the level of safety, the implementation of innovative financing mechanisms for projects, Abdeljalil added. This two-day conference made it possible to take stock of road safety, in terms of design, implementation and operation, and to explore ways and means to develop safer and more secure road infrastructure.
