Morocco Invests $186 Million to Restore Historic Medinas in Northern Cities

Five partnership agreement projects for the rehabilitation and enhancement of the old medinas of Chefchaouen, Ouezzane, Ksar El Kebir, Larache and Tangier were unanimously approved on Monday by the Council of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, for a budget of 1.86 billion dirhams (MMDH).

According to the Regional Council, these agreements aim to preserve the cultural and urban heritage of the old medinas in the region and invest in local development and strengthening tourism and economic attractiveness.

According to the same source, the Tangier medina will benefit from the largest envelope under these agreements, with 850 MDH, followed by Larache (338 MDH), Ksar El Kebir (315 MDH), Ouezzane (242 MDH) and Chefchaouen (115 MDH). For its part, the Regional Council contributed an amount of 267 million dirhams (MDH).

Present at the ceremony, the Wali of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, Mohamed Mhidia, highlighted the special royal attention given to the program for the rehabilitation and enhancement of the old medinas. In his remarks, he noted that the region has a benchmark in upgrading the old medinas, namely the distinguished and successful experience of rehabilitating the old medina of Tetouan. "Thanks to the rehabilitation model of the old medina of Tetouan, we have a benchmark that we should be proud of," he added, noting that "the second phase of the Tetouan rehabilitation program is on the right track."

Furthermore, the Wali of the region Mohamed Mhidia supported that experiences have been accumulated around the upgrading of traditional hotels, the restoration of facades and the renovation of dilapidated buildings, recalling the importance of involving civil society and local architects in the restoration of the old medinas.
