Morocco Introduces Jail Time for Dodging Mandatory Military Service

Announced for the end of this year, compulsory military service provides for heavy fines and prison sentences for those who refuse to join the barracks.
According to the Dahir just published in the Official Bulletin, in addition to a fine ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 dirhams, young people are liable to a sentence of one month to one year in prison if they refuse to perform their military service.
The law specifies in its article 16 that the same penalty applies to any person who has prevented a conscript from joining the barracks. If these acts take place during a war period, all sanctions are doubled.
The Bulletin also states that conscripts will receive a salary between 1,050 and 2,000 dirhams per month in addition to free care, accommodation and many other benefits inherent to this profession.
Contrary to the Bill published a few months ago, women as well as Moroccans of the World are not required to perform military service.
