Morocco’s Internet Speeds Plummet in Global Rankings, Frustrating Customers

While Morocco is gearing up to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup, Maroc Telecom, the main provider of stadiums in the kingdom and Moroccans with internet services, is unable to satisfy its customers in terms of internet connection speed. As a result, the kingdom has plummeted in an international ranking.
Morocco finds itself at the bottom of the international ranking in terms of internet speed published by Speedtest Global Index, alongside war-torn and chaotic countries like Somalia and other neighboring countries facing difficult economic situations, such as Algeria and Mauritania. This plunge is explained by the fact that Maroc Telecom, led by Abdeslam Ahizoune, is experiencing for the third time a major loss of customer confidence. Compared to previous years, the level of customer loss of confidence is very worrying. The operator specified in its latest report on its results last September that it had lost tens of thousands of customers both in Morocco and in its subsidiaries in Africa.
Customers complain about the significant increase in rates for all Fiber Optic services compared to neighboring countries like Spain. Rates are set at 200 dirhams per month for a speed of 300 megabits in the Iberian peninsula, while Moroccans pay 500 dirhams at Maroc Telecom for 100 megabits, of which they only receive 60 and 70 mo). Portugal, which will co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Morocco, also offers better deals to internet users. In Portugal, fiber optic services offer a high speed of 500 megabits for 550 dirhams, while Maroc Telecom limits the speed to 200 megabits for 1000 dirhams.
