Morocco's Interior Minister Defends Emergency Measures Amid COVID-19 Crisis

The Moroccan Minister of the Interior was on Monday before the Interior Committee of the first Chamber of Parliament. This was as part of the examination of the bill on the promulgation of the state of health emergency due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Abdelouafi Laftit was questioned by the PAM parliamentary group of the first Chamber on the disparities in the procedures for implementing the preventive measures. Particularly on the violent interventions relayed on social networks.

The minister said he was surprised by the demonstrations organized in Fez, Salé and Tangier to disapprove of the health emergency measure, while the country is in a crisis situation. He is surprised that Moroccans believe the rumors and does not understand the way of thinking of the latter. He did not fail to ask God to help some local community agents, victims of violence and excesses relayed on social networks, even as they are killing themselves day and night to ask citizens to return and stay at home. "There is no comparison to be made with other centuries," he said.

For Laftit, what is required is cooperation to overcome this crisis. The PAM parliamentary group, author of the interpellation of the Minister of the Interior, warned against any action tending to sabotage the government’s efforts in this crisis. It also notes the existence of many positive images such as that of the woman caïd who acted in a video, with a sense of motherhood and a high sense of authority.
