Morocco Intensifies Drought Response as Water Crisis Deepens

The drinking water deficit is a concern for the Minister of Equipment and Water, who chaired the meeting of the National Committee for Monitoring the Water Situation last week.
The purpose of this meeting was for the participants to take stock of the situation and take the necessary measures to deal with it. Morocco is experiencing one of the worst droughts recorded in 30 years this year. In urban and rural areas, water is scarce and the situation is worrying citizens and the authorities.
To relieve the regions of Morocco most affected, the government had taken a battery of measures, but they seem insufficient to curb the crisis. Thus, during the meeting of the National Committee for Monitoring the Water Situation, several additional measures were taken. Water tankers have been requisitioned to provide drinking water to more than 2.7 million people in rural areas. Desalination and demineralization of brackish aquifer waters will also be carried out to relieve the populations in the deficit areas.
