Morocco Intensifies Crackdown on Knife Crime as Cases Surge 64%

Judicial proceedings were initiated in 2019 against 16,372 individuals for crimes related to the use of bladed weapons. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has called on the prosecutors of the king near the various courts of appeal and courts of first instance of the Kingdom to be firm in the face of this type of crime and offense.
These crimes have seen an increase of 64% compared to the year 2018 which recorded 9,957 arrests for these types of offenses, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. During the same year, 21,608 cases of assault and battery in which bladed weapons were used were recorded in the various courts of the kingdom.
The same source specifies that 26,456 individuals were arrested in these various cases of crimes with bladed weapons, representing an increase of 11% compared to 2019.
In a circular, the Public Prosecutor’s Office pleaded for the competent authorities to put an end to this worrying situation. According to him, the carrying and use of bladed weapons represent a threat to public order and security, to the physical integrity of citizens and to their property. It also endangers the safety of the members of the public authority responsible for enforcing the law, he specifies.
He also calls on these magistrates to be more firm, especially in cases where bladed weapons are used against the officials of the judicial police.
