Morocco to Install 690 New Traffic Radars by 2024 to Boost Road Safety

Transport Minister Mohamed Abdeljalil announced the installation of 690 fixed radars across the country by 2024, to address the scale of accidents that have occurred on road networks.

Questioned on the subject in parliament, the minister explained that road safety remains a priority for the government, which is multiplying short and medium-term investments. Thus, he specified, as part of the improvement of user behavior indicators and the expansion of the road control equipment fleet, 120 mobile radars and 36 utility vehicles were put into service in October. With an investment of 9.1 million dirhams, these devices have a range of over 1,000 meters with a maximum detected speed of 250 km/h.

To this set, 550 new generation devices will be added in the coming days. The objective, according to the minister, is to have 690 fixed radars across the country by 2024. He stressed that "these devices are distinguished by their advanced technical and functional characteristics allowing to monitor speeding offenses as well as non-compliance with signage or crossing of the continuous line and driving in the wrong direction."

Based on the geographical distribution of traffic accidents, the ministry has installed 204 radars in urban areas, while efforts are underway to install 276 additional devices in rural areas, in addition to 70 devices for the control of traffic code violations on highways.
