Morocco Imposes Ramadan Night Curfew to Combat COVID-19 Spread

The head of the Moroccan government was before parliament on Monday to explain the reasons why a night-time curfew has been imposed throughout the month of Ramadan. Saâd-Eddine El Othmani stated that this is the appropriate means to preserve the health of citizens and contain the Sars-Cov-2 virus, of which the new English variant is spreading rapidly.
El Othmani was speaking before the two chambers of Parliament in the presence of Habib El Malki and Hakim Benchamach. "On the recommendations of the medical and scientific committee, the health curfew from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am is the only way to limit the spread of the virus, whose situation has been worrying for a few weeks," said the head of the Executive during a speech that lasted an hour.
When asked why the Executive specifically chose this option, Saâd-Eddine El Othmani indicated that "the English variant of the virus is spreading rapidly, affecting young people through contacts." He stressed that between total confinement and eased confinement, the Executive has chosen "the second option, a middle ground in order to defeat the accursed virus so that it does not circulate at night."
The head of government also recalled that his government signed 8 program contracts worth a total of 1.3 billion dirhams during 2020-2021 to support employees in tourism, restaurants, events, leisure, nurseries, sports halls, the cultural industry and the press. El Othmani called "the population to mobilize and be patient until collective immunization to defeat the pandemic."
