Morocco Imposes Nightly Curfew During Ramadan to Combat COVID-19 Spread

Long feared, the imposition of a curfew during Ramadan is now in effect. The Moroccan government has banned nighttime travel nationwide from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., except for exceptional cases, starting April 13, the date marking the beginning of the holy month. The various preventive measures previously announced are maintained.

This decision comes on the basis of the recommendations of the Scientific and Technical Commission regarding the need to continue implementing the necessary measures to combat the spread of the new coronavirus (Covid-19), mainly with the appearance of new variants in the country, the government said in a statement.

The Moroccan government specified that this decision is also part of the strengthening of the precautionary measures taken to preserve the health of citizens, takes into account the strong mobility that characterizes Moroccan social fabric during Ramadan and stems from the concern that this month takes place in appropriate health conditions, commensurate with its great religious symbolism.

The government also praised the spirit of responsibility and the strong adherence of citizens to compliance with the various preventive measures adopted since the announcement of the state of health emergency in the kingdom. It also urges each citizen to continue the efforts made, to ensure to take all necessary precautions and to respect the measures taken, in order to preserve the important achievements made by Morocco in the fight against this pandemic.
