Morocco Imposes Jail Time, Fines for Violating COVID-19 Lockdown Orders

The Council of Government adopted, on Sunday, March 22, 2020, a decree that provides for penalties, including imprisonment, for any violation of the confinement measures.
"Any violation of the orders and decisions of the public authorities is punishable by a sentence of one to three months’ imprisonment and a fine of 300 to 1,300 dirhams, or one of the two penalties," can be read in the decree.
The adoption of this decree follows the organization of marches in several cities in Morocco such as Tangier, Tetouan, Fez and Sale on the night of Saturday, March 21 to Sunday, March 22. This constitutes a violation of the mandatory confinement decreed by the Ministry of the Interior to counter the progression of the COVID-19 epidemic.
