Morocco to Import 2.5 Million Tons of Wheat Amid Drought-Induced Shortage

Morocco wants to import 2.5 million tons of wheat between July 1 and September 30, 2023, announced the National Interprofessional Office of Cereals and Legumes (ONICL).
After the meager harvest recorded this year due to the drought, Morocco will import large quantities of wheat from Russia, Ukraine, France, Germany, Argentina and the United States, reports Maghreb Intelligence.
The Moroccan state has decided to pay the difference between the cost of foreign wheat and the reference import price of 270 dirhams per quintal (271.60 dollars per ton). A way for the state to facilitate low-cost cereal imports from the Black Sea, say the traders.
For this 2022/23 campaign which is ending this month, some 4.7 million tons of wheat have been imported by Morocco from the European Union. Algeria, for its part, has imported wheat from Russia.
