Morocco to Import 1 Million Sheep for Eid Al-Adha Amid Rising Prices

A few weeks before the celebration of Eid Al-Adha, the government is mobilizing to meet the needs of the population. In total, one million head will soon be imported.
According to Rachid Benali, president of the Moroccan Confederation of Agriculture and Rural Development (COMADER), Morocco currently has 4 million head of sheep for Eid Al-Adha, but it still needs an additional one million head to meet the population’s demands, reports the Arabic-language daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. The kingdom is then considering importing livestock, sheep, to cover these needs. This import could stabilize prices, which would be 5 to 10% higher than last year, due to the rise in the prices of animal feed, fuel and therefore transportation costs.
Morocco has already imported some 10,000 sheep from Spain. These animals are of a similar breed to those in the kingdom. Imports from Romania are also being considered.
