Morocco Implements Satellite Tracking for All Fishing Vessels in Its Waters

Morocco monitors by satellite all Moroccan and foreign fishing vessels operating off the Moroccan coast, recently stated Zakia Driouich, Secretary of State to the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, in charge of Maritime Fisheries.
In response to parliamentary questions, Zakia Driouich specified that all these vessels are tracked by satellite, as they are equipped with the "Vemise" system. The satellite also allows monitoring of quantities caught at sea to ensure that the limits set by law for traditional fishing are respected.
Regarding fishing, the Secretary of State indicated that the prices of fishery products, like those of other foods, are subject to the logic of supply and demand, noting that "supply is limited by various factors, including notably the state of the sea, which affects the availability of fish and, consequently, the satisfaction of demand for this product."
The State Secretariat for Maritime Fisheries ensures the protection of national fisheries and fishery resources to ensure their sustainability and market supply, added Driouich, confirming that the "Halieutis" strategy has maintained a landing volume of around 1.4 million tons over the last decade.
"The government is now seeking, through its new strategy, to give new impetus to the local seafood market," concluded the official.
