Morocco's Illegal Sand Trade: High-Ranking Officials Linked to Unregulated Quarries

High-ranking officials are among the "clandestine" operators of sand quarries who market poor quality sand throughout Morocco. Moreover, this activity escapes the taxation imposed in the 2023 finance law.

Companies linked to high-ranking political officials or members of certain political parties market poor quality sand in several cities of the kingdom, particularly in Khémisset, Sidi Yahya, Sidi Kacem, Souk-El-Arba-du-Rharb and Guercif, in flagrant violation of the regulations in force. This is revealed by a file submitted to the president of the parliamentary information mission dedicated to sand quarries, reports Assabah.

According to sources from the Arabic-language daily, this file is prepared by a consumer rights defense association that had already taken legal action in this regard. It reveals the maneuvers carried out by companies to sell poor quality or completely unsuitable sand for construction on the market. The association also specifies that "these companies use heavy equipment to extract sand that they sell on the market".
