Morocco Human Rights Group Urges Release of Political Prisoners Amid COVID-19 Concerns

The Moroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH) calls for the decongestion of prisons to protect detainees from the virus. In this sense, it proposes the release of political prisoners.
"This is a measure that has been taken by other countries, and it will on the one hand, ease the pressure on prisons in these times of epidemic, and on the other hand, help regain the trust of citizens in their policies," said the president of the AMDH, Aziz Ghali.
For him, "if this request mainly concerns political detainees, it also concerns prisoners who do not (or no longer) represent a danger to the country, such as minors, the elderly, and detainees close to release." He also said that "the Association intends to make a visit to the DGAPR to inquire about the situation of the detainees and the measures decided by the prison authorities to secure the prisons in these times of epidemic".
It should be recalled that the Moroccan Observatory of Prisons (OMP) made a similar request, calling for the "release of certain categories of detainees to avoid their contamination by the coronavirus".
