Morocco's UN Human Rights Council Bid Gains Wide International Support

Several institutions such as the African Union, the League of Arab States, and many other regional groupings, as well as friendly countries, support Morocco’s candidacy for the Human Rights Council for the period 2023-2025. The announcement was made on Monday by Minister Mustapha Ramid, who spoke by videoconference during the high-level segment of the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

The Minister of State indicated in his speech that Morocco has taken various actions that demonstrate its willingness to continue its openness to the special procedures of the Human Rights Council. Recently, it has officially invited the Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water to visit Morocco this year, in order to understand and assess the efforts and challenges in this area.

Mustapha Ramid highlighted the efforts made by the Kingdom in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the actions taken to ensure a fair balance between the precautionary measures taken, the economic and social challenges, and the international commitments in the field of human rights. The minister stressed that the authorities have worked to mobilize all resources and capacities, to strengthen the protection of the right to life and the right to health, as an absolute priority.

This also involves the means implemented to support vulnerable and affected social groups by the socio-economic effects of the health crisis. He did not forget the national vaccination campaign that started on January 28, which demonstrates the authorities’ determination to progressively protect the population.

Regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue, the minister reiterated Morocco’s commitment and attachment to the search for a realistic and pragmatic political solution that respects the sovereignty of the Kingdom and its territorial integrity. "The autonomy initiative, as a serious and credible proposal, remains the only basis for reaching a definitive settlement of this artificial regional dispute," he affirmed.
