In Morocco, household confidence rebounds, but deep unease persists

The confidence of Moroccan families is rising in the first quarter of 2026. The index calculated by the High Commission for Planning reaches 64.4 points, marking an improvement in the overall perception of the economy, even though concerns about living standards persist.

Despite this improvement in the index, the feeling about daily life remains difficult. Three quarters of households say their standard of living has deteriorated over the past year. Over the next twelve months, more than 45% fear a further decline, a sign that economic anxiety remains deeply rooted.

Employment prospects also show slight progress while remaining negative. Approximately 58% of Moroccans still expect an increase in unemployment. Moreover, for nearly 67% of them, now is not the right time to buy durable goods.

On the financial front, the situation is easing slightly. Nearly 60% of households manage to cover their expenses with their income, but 37.5% still have to go into debt or dip into their savings. However, hope is returning for the future: 21.1% expect an improvement in their finances in the coming months, tipping the balance of opinion into positive territory.

Savings remain a major challenge, however, as only 12% of households think they can set money aside. The main source of concern remains food inflation: more than 93% of those surveyed are seeing prices skyrocket and nearly 79% fear this surge will continue in the year ahead.
