Morocco Hands Down First Prison Sentence for Psychological Violence Against Woman

A first in the annals of Moroccan justice. Applying the law on violence against women, a man was sentenced by the court of first instance in Fès for brutality and psychological harassment.
The facts occurred last October, when a young woman was returning home from a birthday party held in a cafe in the city. It was late, and a friend offered to accompany her on a motorcycle, reports Alyaoum24.
On their way, they were joined by a second guest. Unexpectedly, he drew a bladed weapon and forced her to follow them to an isolated place to end the evening. Paralyzed, the young woman had no choice but to comply, especially, she confided, that the second was under the influence of alcohol.
Later, seeing a police patrol, she began to cry for help. The bikers then chased the kidnappers, who were neutralized.
Final verdict: the court sentenced one of the kidnappers to 5 months in prison with a fine of 1,000 dirhams, for drunkenness and threat with a bladed weapon, while the boyfriend received 3 months in prison and a similar fine for psychological violence.
