Morocco’s Hammam Closures Spark Controversy: 200,000 Jobs at Risk

The decision of the Ministry of the Interior to close the hammams three days a week will have negative consequences for the employees in the sector, warned Fatima Zahra Bata, the deputy of the Party of Justice and Development (PJD).
In a letter addressed to the Minister of the Interior, Fatima Zahra Bata indicated that this decision to close the hammams for three days a week will deprive more than 200,000 employees in the sector of their daily income. For the MP, this measure will only reinforce the precariousness of these already vulnerable people whose monthly income does not exceed 2,000 or 3,000 dirhams.
The PAM parliamentary group deputy added that the closure of public baths will cause more problems than it solves in this context of inflation and rising consumer products. Fatima Zahra Bata also stressed that the public bath sector is not one of those that consume a lot of water, considering the decision to close them inopportune, while during this time many SPAs remain open.
