Morocco Grapples with Death Penalty Debate on World Day Against Capital Punishment

The international community is celebrating October 10th, the World Day Against the Death Penalty. For a few years now, Morocco has been moving towards its abolition, even though death sentences have been handed down for certain crimes.
Human rights organizations never miss an opportunity to remind of the need to preserve human life. Those who demand the death penalty for crimes as atrocious as the rape and murder of minors do not lack arguments. The schools of thought on the death penalty clash without managing to tip the scales one way or the other, reports Maroc Diplomatique.
Be that as it may, for the international community, the right to life is one of the sacred principles recognized by the human rights system. The World Day Against the Death Penalty is a kind of pressure that the international community exerts on states to force their hand.
In Morocco, the issue is making headlines. The rape and murder of Adnane, an 11-year-old child in Tangier, has revived the debate on the application or not of this provision. While Internet users call for a death sentence for the cruelty of the act committed, the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) and its president are playing the card of respect for human life, even that of the individual who would be found guilty of the murder of young Adnane. For Amina Bouayach, it is important to suspend the execution of the death penalty, an important step in the march towards its abolition.
