Morocco in the global top 10 for taxi scams

The analysis carried out by AllClear scrutinized more than 30,000 comments from the main online travel communities. The verdict places Turkey firmly in the lead, accumulating more than 4,200 messages reporting bad experiences, twice as many as India, which is second in the ranking. Thailand, Vietnam and Egypt complete this top 5 of places where discussions about fraud are most frequent.

Morocco is not spared from this phenomenon. The Kingdom ranks 8th globally with 1,329 recorded comments, just behind Mexico and ahead of the United States. France also appears on this list, occupying the 11th place, confirming that the problems are not limited to developing countries.

The trap of the "broken" meter

Scams often follow the same scenario, mainly around airports, which account for a third of the complaints. Travelers are accosted by touts or unofficial drivers offering attractive rates before demanding exorbitant sums upon arrival. Another common technique is to claim that the meter is broken in order to impose an inflated flat rate, sometimes two to three times higher than normal.

To limit the risks, experts recommend refusing solicitations in the arrival halls and favoring the official queues. Once in the vehicle, it is imperative to request the activation of the meter or to firmly agree on a fixed price before the car starts.
