Morocco Gears Up for ’Marhaba’ Operation: 3 Million Expats Expected to Return

Morocco is preparing for the arrival of Moroccans living abroad. According to Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, the preparations for the Marhaba operation began on May 3 following a meeting of the national transit commission, chaired by the Ministry of the Interior.
Similarly, coordination with Spain began on May 17 with the holding of the Moroccan-Spanish joint commission in charge of the transit operation, said Mr. Bourita, who was answering oral questions about the "Marhaba" operation. The two countries are working on issues related to fluidity, traffic, support, communication and health monitoring, he said.
For the minister, the "Marhaba" operation is unique in its kind and requires ensuring certain devices, specifying that the changes, both at the international level and those concerning the Moroccan community abroad, have meant that the organization of this operation takes place all year round.
Last year, some three million Moroccans living abroad visited the country, up 4% from 2019, the reference year before the Covid-19 epidemic.
