Morocco: funeral meals... banned

The inhabitants of two Moroccan villages will no longer have to organize funeral meals. A decision was made to this effect during a public meeting.

No more funeral meals in Taghit and Ajraghni, located in the province of Boulemane. At the end of a public meeting, it was decided to ban these meals in these two villages, reports TelQuel. This decision was recorded in a report written by representatives of the villages. Thus, people coming to present their condolences are required to abstain from eating during the mourning periods, and no longer to follow this custom during funeral ceremonies. They also have the obligation to present their condolences at the time of the burial, and not to return to the home of the deceased after the funeral, "except in case of absolute necessity", it is specified.

Through this decision, applicable to both men and women, the residents of the two villages intend to remedy the funeral customs "sometimes considered excessive". Another objective: "to show respect for the deceased and his family".
